Mujian officially launched their activities during the world-renowned Edinburgh Festival Fringe. From supporting workshops and markets at Chinese Culture Week (CCW), to organizing dedicated Asian networking events, Mujian is already demonstrating its strong ambition to uplift and connect Asian creatives in the UK.
Founded in early 2025, Mujian operates under the slogan: “Where Asian Creatives Connect, Grow, and Thrive”. When asked what motivated her to start the company, founder Parasol shares: “I’m a sound operator in the theatre industry, and many of my friends work in similar roles. We’ve all seen how difficult it is for international productions and individuals to break into the industry — let alone be recognized.”
She’s not wrong. According to “8: Arts, Media and Ethnic Inequalities” by Sarita Malik and William Shankley, ethnic minority groups remain underrepresented in the UK’s creative industries. Despite making up 14.1% of the population in England and Wales (and 40% in London), they account for only 6% of workers in design, 9.1% in film/TV/radio, and 6.7% in music, performing, and visual arts (Warwick Commission, 2015).
“We want to change that — for myself, for my community, and for the industry,” Parasol says. “Equity doesn’t mean prioritizing people of colour — it means treating everyone equally. We want Asian and global majority artists to be seen, and their voices to be heard.”
In fact, Parasol was active even before founding Mujian. She began organizing networking events in London in 2024, which quickly gained momentum. Now based in Edinburgh, she’s expanding that vision — launching three major networking events during the Fringe:
6th August: DJ Music Night at King’s Hall, as part of CCW
14th August: Brunch Meet-Up at Rabble
25th August: Wrap-Up Party Night at Indigo Yard
These gatherings are designed to build connections, offer support, and celebrate the talent and diversity of Asian creatives across the UK and beyond.
