Fresh from its sold-out world premiere at White Lab Theatre at Central Saint Martins in London on May 7, 2025, A Journey to the West arrives at Camden Fringe 2025 with a condensed, high-impact version of its genre-blending psychodrama — fusing Chinese tradition with the emotional chaos of Gen Z identity.

Inspired by the classic epic, this bold reimagining follows Xiaohua, a sheltered international student whose surreal experiences in London mirror the mythic trials of the Monkey King. Confronting overprotection, cultural conflict, and emotional fragmentation, his journey becomes a symbol for the wider immigrant and global youth experience.

Blending Sichuan Opera face-changing, digital projection, electronic music, and live audience interaction, the show breaks conventional theatre form to deliver a poetic, unpredictable, and visually powerful performance.

Following a critically acclaimed world premiere at White Lab Theatre in London this May, A Journey to the West returns to the stage under the direction of Tang Yi, lead actor of the viral short film Study Abroad (over 300 million views), winner of Best Short Video at the Beijing International Film Festival. Produced by Sunny Jie Liu, a cross-cultural performance curator, the production is shaped by a strong collaborative vision. The team also features Zhang Zhijie, an internationally celebrated master of Sichuan Opera face-changing, who serves as the performance director.

Blending traditional Chinese stagecraft with improvisation, psychodrama, and digital media, the work offers a poetic and immersive theatrical experience. It speaks to a wide range of audiences — from Gen Z and international students navigating identity and generational pressure, to parents, educators, and Fringe lovers interested in experimental forms, East-West fusion, and emerging global voices.
