Our Reviewers

Our reviewers come from mostly Chinese backgrounds, but also backgrounds across the Asian and cross-cultural communities, including theatre practitioners, writers, scholars, and emerging critics. Each reviewer is selected for their understanding of performing arts, clarity of writing, and commitment to fair and inclusive criticism. We value diversity in cultural perspective, experience, and artistic approach.

Reviewers are invited or approved by our editorial team based on writing samples and relevant experience. We assess each writer’s background to ensure their ability to provide informed, balanced, and original perspectives. All reviewers undergo periodic evaluation to maintain consistency and editorial quality.

We also welcome contributors, provided that they have no personal or professional involvement with the production being reviewed.

Conflict of Interest

Writers and editors must disclose any personal or professional relationships with the productions or artists they cover. Contributors cannot review or report on works they are personally involved in.

What We Review

Our coverage primarily focuses on:

  • Theatre productions (plays, devised works, and fringe performances);

  • Dance-theatre and performance art;

  • Cross-disciplinary or Asian diaspora projects;

  • Festivals and cultural events;

  • Occasionally: music, visual art, or film, if directly connected to performance.

How We Review

Reviews on Sound Behind Curtain consider productions from multiple perspectives — including artistic concept, writing, direction, performance, and technical execution (lighting, set, sound, and design). Our review will be published in 3 to 8 working days from the date of the performance attended.

Please note that a review does not imply endorsement of any political or ideological views expressed in the production.

Editorial Independence

Our editorial team maintains full independence. While we may accept press tickets or invitations to attend performances, these do not influence the content or tone of our reviews. Final publication decisions rest solely with the editorial team.

Tone & Approach

We write with respect, openness, and curiosity. Our reviews are not only about judgment, but about dialogue — building communication across different backgrounds, celebrating artistic achievement while offering thoughtful and constructive critique that artists can engage with meaningfully.
