This August at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, six award-winning artists from Hong Kong and Taiwan, the very finest voices rising from Asia’s rich artistic tapestry, invite you on a journey beyond the stage. Through dance, ritual, and raw storytelling, they weave threads of memory, identity, and resistance into a living, breathing tapestry of human experience.
Designed to bridge Asian creativity to international stages, Asia Base creates new touring opportunities and amplifies the visibility of artists from diverse Asian backgrounds. theSpaceUK welcomes these extraordinary works from Hong Kong and Taiwan as they gain a powerful global voice, connecting with audiences worldwide.
Winners of the Scotsman Fringe First Award 2023 & Hong Kong Young Artist Award 2024, Ah-Ma (Hong Kong) by Cathy Lam and performed by Kasen Tsui, is a poetic solo theatre piece that weaves memory, fire, and family into an elegy for a grandmother slipping into silence. Dance Dance Involution (Hong Kong), directed by Eugene Ma and performed by Dorothy Chow, Ashley So & Shirley Wong, is a a wild, witty ride through Gen Z hustle culture, quiet quitting, and the chaos of ambition.
By and Starring Annie Cheung, DOTS (Hong Kong), is a raw, darkly funny solo piece exploring high-functioning depression and the pressure to succeed, that was Nominated for IATCHK Performer of the Year, HK Theatre Libre Outstanding Lead Actress, and multiple Hong Kong Drama Awards. Sole to Soul (Taiwan) is visually stunning, deeply moving exploration of Chinese womanhood and a revolution in motion.
Hsu Chen-Wei Dance Company presents, Sàng Tsáu (Taiwan), is a mesmerising spiritual journey that transforms Taoist “sending-off-the-deities” ceremonies into breathtaking dance. A quiet yet powerful meditation on women’s resilience and hope, Good morning and Good Bye is an exquisite dance theatre piece that has captured the hearts of Taiwan’s independent performance scene. A tender ritual of renewal that will stay with you long after the final bow.
Company leader Cathy Lam explained that: "These performances are more than shows, they are acts of remembrance and survival, whispers of silenced histories and fierce declarations of hope. They unfold like sacred rituals, where the body becomes a vessel for stories that pulse with grief, courage, and transformation."
