Novy’s Guide is the anarchic, heartfelt, and absurdly funny story of Nobuo Otsuka, a Japanese clown and theatre-maker who fumbles his way through British culture, identity, and the hilarious world of spiritual capitalism. Perfect for fans of Gaulier-style clowning, immigrant stories, and chaotic solo theatre, this is a must-see for anyone who's ever felt out of place — and made art from the mess.

Nobuo’s style is rooted in clowning, infused with storytelling, mischief, and warm unpredictability. His solo show, Novy’s Guide to Mysterious Mistakes, showcases his singular talent for turning cultural confusion into joyful creative gold.

Nobuo Otsuka is a Japanese theatre-maker and clown with international experience across Japan, the UK, and Kenya. He trained at the New National Theatre Tokyo, the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama, and later at École Philippe Gaulier, where he met co-creator and director Eleanor Hindson.

With a truly international perspective, Nobuo is known for his physical comedy, sharp cultural insight, and playful vulnerability. A bold, distinctive performer — and definitely one to watch.

"It can be hard getting to know people in London. The language barrier is hard. It's funny — after people see me do my clown performance, people want to know me. I'm the same as I was before, but they see more of me somehow, and I like that."

— Nobuo Otsuka
