Lin Lu-Chieh has performed at countless birthday parties, yet he has never hosted one of his own. In Birthday Party, by Lu Production, he finally invites the audience to celebrate with him. What begins as a lesson in how to throw a birthday party then becomes a playful journey through the magician’s memories.
The magic tricks are woven naturally into this journey. They are intimate rather than spectacular, and those familiar with stage illusion may even recognise a prop or two. Still, this does little to spoil the pleasure of watching them unfold. Much of the charm comes from the magician himself, who performs with warmth and a gentle touch of deadpan humour that will make everyone in the room feel welcome.
Lin brings magic and storytelling together with care, using each trick to open up another memory and inviting the audience to become part of it. He introduces a gummy sweet connected to his Taiwanese childhood, before scattering handfuls across the audience as though feeding fish. For a moment, the room feels like childhood again: the simple joy of holding out your hands and hoping a sweet will land in them.
Those hoping for dazzling magic may leave wanting more, yet the Fringe is rarely about finding the largest illusion. Its particular joy lies in meeting performers who discover imaginative ways to share their stories. Birthday Party is one such show: modest in scale, generous in spirit and deeply personal.
A final tip: sit near the front if you can. Participating in the magic could really make a difference to the experience. And if you are lucky, you may even leave with a balloon dog of your own.
