Bond-Age is an experimental physical theatre piece that explores the tensions and restrictions within human relationships, from lovers to family. What connects us? What confines us? Using BDSM as a lens to examine human intimacy and power dynamics is undoubtedly a bold and original approach.
Written, directed, and performed by Wenjun Zhu, with Stephan Fraser co-performing, this physical theatre unfolds through several distinct segments: romantic entanglement, the attraction between two individuals from different racial and gender backgrounds, and the bond between mother and child. Each scene is brought to life with its own unique set of props.
The performances are fully committed and physically intense. Zhu and Fraser maintain a captivating presence, commanding attention even in the show’s more abstract or stylised moments. Many moments are enhanced by live music, played by Lou Leveque, triggered in real time via MIDI controllers and violin, which adds a great dynamic emotional layer to the action.
The show attempts to address multiple themes: race, family, cultural clash, and identity; however, the 45-minute format struggles to fully contain all. The complexity of props occasionally leads to clunky transitions, and an interaction with the live musician during one scene briefly disrupts immersion. The use of multiple languages is innovative but not fully conveyed. Particularly, Mandarin in the final scene, which carries a significant message, may leave non-Mandarin-speaking audiences uncertain about the symbolic meaning of “落叶归根” (“fallen leaves return to their roots”), and the calligraphy moment risks feeling disconnected from the production’s central arc.
Still, Bond-Age is a compelling act of theatrical experimentation. Its fusion of physicality, live music, and emotional risk-taking is undeniably bold. With greater narrative cohesion and refinement, it could evolve into a truly impactful work, one that dares to ask what binds us, and what breaks us.
