A letter can wait many years for its answer. In Letters to a Young Poet, Rainer Maria Rilke offered guidance to a writer searching for direction. More than a century later, Brazilian performer Ivo MĆ¼ller offers a reply of his own. Quiet and tender, One Million Words explores artistic solitude and the longing for human connection, drawing on Rilkeās writing to ask what it means to belong.
Before MĆ¼ller enters, the stage has already begun to tell its story. Hundreds of letters cover the floor around a desk, resembling the scattered thoughts of a poet while forming an island of memories for MĆ¼ller to step into. Various objects then gradually emerge from beneath the paper, offering glimpses of Rilkeās restless mind and his attempts to understand himself and the world around him.
The language is the heart of the show. Rilkeās reflections on love, loss and the urgent need to create flow naturally into one another. MĆ¼ller brings warmth and sincerity to them, inviting us to experience the beauty of Rilkeās writing, not as a lecture but as a private exchange. The performance also encourages the audience to drift along. Not every sentence needs to be held onto: one thought may pass almost unnoticed, while another may suddenly seem as though it was written for you alone.
This meditative approach also means that the show may be less suitable for those expecting a more conventional drama. The staging remains largely static, with limited variation in pace or emotional tone. Its stillness sustains a reflective atmosphere, though it can eventually make the piece difficult to follow. The show rewards patience, but its restrained rhythm may not keep everyone fully engaged.
In all, One Million Words is best approached as a piece of live poetry, leaving each listener to find their own path through it. Rilke once sent a letter to a young poet searching for answers; a century later, MĆ¼ller sends a tender reply across time.
