Stunted follows two housemates, Celine (Christine Fang) and Max (Kenon Veno), whose close friendship has gradually developed into a deeply codependent relationship. Over the course of an ordinary morning in their shared flat, tensions that have long remained unspoken begin to surface, forcing both of them to confront how they rely on, hurt and hold each other back. What initially feels like familiar domestic bickering slowly reveals a much more fragile relationship, caught between intimacy, dependence and the need to move on.
Celine (Christine Fang) and Max (Kenon Veno) perform with an infectious level of commitment and energy. Both throw themselves fully into the material, delivering highly physical, confident and impressively sustained performances throughout.
The production also has a strong visual identity. The domestic set feels convincingly lived-in, grounding the story in the recognisable intimacy and messiness of a shared home, while director Haonan Wang finds playful and inventive ways to activate the space. The movement direction (Kuba Pawelczak), lighting and sound also work particularly well together, creating clear shifts in rhythm and atmosphere.
At times, however, the heightened performance style pushes the production into an almost unsettling intensity. While this gives the piece a distinctive energy, certain moments feel slightly overplayed, with emotions and physicality repeatedly driven to their highest register. For a story rooted in the quieter complexities of intimacy, dependency and emotional vulnerability, this can occasionally leave less room for subtlety, making some of the relationship’s more delicate shifts feel less affecting than they might otherwise be.
Energetic, visually playful and performed with total commitment, Stunted is nevertheless a confident production with a strong sense of theatricality.
